What is SEO and what is it used for?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It is the work of making a website easier for search engines to understand and more useful to people looking for information, products or services.

Why does SEO matter?

When you search for something, you usually choose from the results you can see rather than visiting every relevant website. For a site owner, being discoverable can help the right people find their content. SEO is therefore one part of digital marketing, not a separate shortcut to business success.

A page's position is not explained by a single change, and SEO does not guarantee first place. More visits do not automatically produce more sales: visitors still need to find what they came for and decide whether the product, service or information meets their needs.

Is SEO free?

Organic search results are different from paid advertisements. You do not buy an organic ranking by purchasing an ad. However, calling SEO “free” can be misleading: writing, maintaining and improving a website takes time and may involve professional fees.

What work does it involve?

A useful starting point is to organise your pages clearly, write descriptive titles and links, and answer your readers' actual questions. Check that important content can be accessed and understood, and maintain it when information changes. Google's SEO Starter Guide explains these basics and makes clear that there is no automatic route to the top of search results.

Results are not necessarily immediate. Some changes take time to be reflected in search, and some have no noticeable effect. Evaluate improvements over time instead of treating a particular number of days, words or characters as a promise of success.

Learning SEO or getting help

An SEO specialist helps plan and assess this work. You can also start learning through documentation and courses, including free resources. Before paying for help, ask what will actually be changed and how progress will be measured; be cautious about promises of guaranteed rankings.

This is an introduction, not a claim that the site's rankings have been measured or improved by a particular amount. Browse our SEO tutorials as the section grows.
