FileGrouper is a tool that automatically groups files into separate folders.
For example, imagine a folder containing 100 files that you want to divide into groups of three. FileGrouper creates 34 folders: it moves three files into each of the first 33 folders and the remaining file into folder 34.
Before starting: the tool moves files. Make a backup and try it with copies of unimportant files first. This English guide retains the original executable and does not change the program.
Before moving your files
Requirements: Windows 7 or later and a user account with administrator permissions, as confirmed by the tool's maintainer. This documentation review is not an execution test on every Windows version.
Keep your backup outside the folder you are about to organise. Prepare a test folder with a few expendable file copies, place the executable there and check the path shown under Current directory:
before answering the prompts.
If that path is not the folder you intend to organise, close the tool and check where you launched it. Do not make your first test in a system folder or with your only copy of a document.
1. Copy the executable into the folder
Copy FileGrouper.exe into the folder containing the files you want to group.
2. Start FileGrouper
Double-click FileGrouper.exe, or select it and press Enter.
3. Choose how many files go in each folder
At the prompt How many files do you want to move to each folder?
, type the number of files per folder and press Enter.
4. Choose the sorting order
At How do you want to sort the files?
, choose one of the two options:
- 1 — Name: sort by file name.
- 2 — Creation time: sort by creation date and time.
Type 1 or 2 and press Enter.
5. Check the folder count
The application displays the number of folders under Total folders:

6. Review the results
It displays each folder it creates and the files moved into that folder.
How to interpret and check the result
The chosen count specifies how many files you want in each group. The last folder may contain fewer: the example of 100 files in groups of three leaves 33 full groups and one folder with the remaining file. That remainder is not itself an error.
The documented sorting choices are Name
and Creation time
. Ordering by name or creation time is different from requesting classification by contents. The illustrated screen does not offer a document-type classification option.

. Afterwards, inspect the created folders and open a few copies to check that the expected files are in the right places. The illustrated screen ends with PRESS ENTER TO EXIT
, allowing the listing to be read before closing it.
If the result is not what you expected
Before running the program again, note the displayed directory, chosen count, selected order and any console message. Do not assume that running it a second time undoes the first run. For another test, use a different folder with fresh copies and retain the original backup.
This guide does not document an automatic undo feature or establish how existing destination folders or naming conflicts are handled. Avoid testing those situations with irreplaceable files. If you describe a problem in the comments, include your Windows version, selected options and the exact message, hiding names or paths that contain personal information.
Direct download or ZIP archive
The published ZIP was checked: it contains only FileGrouper.exe, and that file matches the direct EXE download. These are two ways to obtain the same executable. If you choose ZIP, extract its contents before following step 1; do not work from the compressed-folder view.
