If you are starting an Instagram account, it is natural to want more followers, views, likes or enquiries. Your profile is a useful place to begin: someone arriving from a post should be able to understand who you are and what they can expect from you.
This guide adapts the original article's profile-writing advice. It is not a description of Instagram's current ranking algorithm, and editing a bio does not guarantee more reach, customers or sales.
Distinguish your username, name and bio
Your @username identifies your account. The name displayed on your profile and the biography are separate opportunities to explain your work. The exact arrangement of these fields can change with the app's interface.
If your name field only repeats a handle that does not explain your activity, consider adding a short, accurate description. Keep a recognisable personal or business name rather than replacing it with a long list of search terms. In the bio, explain the benefit or subject of the account in natural language.
Examples from the original guide
- Digital marketing: terms such as digital marketing, small business and selling on Instagram may describe your focus. A clearer sentence could be: “Practical Instagram tips for small businesses.” Use it only if that is what you actually offer.
- Beauty: makeup, skincare, beauty and cosmetics are possible topics. Choose the ones your posts cover instead of claiming expertise in every area.
- Clothing: a showroom could state “Clothing and accessories” and explain where or how customers can browse its collection.
These are writing examples, not combinations that unlock an algorithm. Accurate words help a person decide whether your account is relevant; repeating them excessively can make the profile harder to read.
Make the profile consistent with the content
Read your name and bio together with a few recent posts. Do they describe the same activity? If someone is interested, is the next step clear? A profile that promises one thing while posting something unrelated can create confusion even if it receives visits.
Try a clear description, keep publishing useful material and assess the enquiries or interactions you receive over time. Do not attribute every change in performance to a bio edit.
